Women’s Soccer News

Kyle Laborde-Ayres of the Ryerson Rams men’s soccer team and Rachel Hutchinson from the Trinity Western Spartans women’s soccer squad are the U SPORTS Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending October 13, 2019.

Male Athlete of the Week: Kyle Laborde Ayres, Ryerson

For a second straight week, Kyle Laborde-Ayres (Scarborough, Ont.) made his mark on the pitch, now capturing Ryerson’s Male Athlete of the Week honours two straight times. But his latest efforts helped the Rams men’s soccer team do something no other group had done this season.

In the Rams' only game of the week, Laborde-Ayres potted two goals against the No. 2-ranked Carleton Ravens to help lift Ryerson to a 3-1 win in OUA action. The victory put a stop to Carleton's unbeaten streak, as the Ravens had not yet lost this entering the match. Laborde-Ayres’ two goals, which opened the scoring in the 28th minute and doubled the lead just seven minutes later, also matched the entire number of goals Carleton had conceded to that point of the season. The second-year forward now has four goals in his last three games and is becoming one of the league's most dangerous offensive threats for the perennial contenders.

Female Athlete of the Week: Rachel Hutchinson, Trinity Western

Spartans fifth-year forward Rachel Hutchinson played a central role in TWU’s weekend sweep over the UFV Cascades in CW action.

In Friday’s home match, Hutchinson recorded a goal and two assists to guide the Spartans to a 5-1 win. Then in Sunday’s rematch in Abbotsford, she recorded another goal and assist – including the game-winner in the 30th minute – helping TWU earn its 10th win on the season and clinch a home playoff berth.

After the impressive weekend, Hutchinson now sits tied for third in points in the nation with 13 (6 G, 7 A). She also sits in a tie for first in U SPORTS with seven assists through 12 games.

Hutchinson and the Spartans close out their regular season this weekend, as they play host to UBC Okanagan Friday (5 p.m.) and Thompson Rivers Saturday (5 p.m.).
