Women’s Soccer News

The defending Canada West champion and reigning U SPORTS silver medalist Alberta Golden Bears open the season as the top-ranked men’s hockey team in the nation.

The Golden Bears (2-0-0), who fell just short of defending their 2018 David Johnston University Cup with a 4-2 loss to the UNB Reds last March in Lethbridge, swept their weekend series at UBC, winning 4-3 in overtime and 5-0. The second-ranked and reigning national champion Reds (1-1-0) split the opening weekend of their AUS campaign, dominating Saint Mary’s (1-1-0) on Friday 9-3, before falling 6-4 to Acadia (1-1-0)  on Saturday.

Both teams head into a bye week from conference action for exhibition games against NCAA opponents, with Alberta visiting St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth, while UNB faces Boston College and Maine.

In women’s rugby, the Laval Rouge et Or (5-0-0) are the new team to beat in the national rankings. Laval shut out the then-No. 6 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees (2-2-1) by a score of 32-0 in their commanding victory last Saturday. This is the first time in program history that Laval is ranked first overall. The Rouge et Or will look to keep the momentum against Sherbrooke (2-2-0) this upcoming Friday.

In men’s cross country, the Calgary Dinos are now at the top of the table after a dominant performance at the Vikes Invitational, where the team placed first overall. In women’s cross country, Laval and Queen’s now share the top spot.

The Trinity Western Spartans (7-0-1) are now the top team in women’s soccer after two big victories this past weekend. The Spartans dispatched the Victoria Vikes (3-2-3) by a score of 3-2 before defeating the UBC Thunderbirds (4-1-3) by a score of 2-0.

In other U SPORTS rankings, Montreal (men’s soccer) and Western (football) remain at No.1 for another week.
