Women’s Soccer News

The Trinity Western Spartans begin the new women’s volleyball season as the top-ranked team in the country.

The Spartans (2-0), who were last ranked No. 1 on Jan.15, 2019 opened the Canada West season with a pair of road victories over the Alberta Pandas, in a rematch of last year’s consolation final at the national championship. Trinity Western now prepares for its home-opening series this weekend against Winnipeg. The reigning silver medalist Ryerson Rams (0-0) and national champion UBC Thunderbirds (2-0), start the season at No.2 and No.3, respectively.

On the ice, there are a pair of new national leaders this week. In men’s hockey, the UNB Reds (5-1-0) are back on top, thanks to back-to-back home victories over then-ranked No.4 St FX (3-2-1) and Dalhousie (2-4-2). The Reds will look to stay in the driver’s seat on the road this weekend, once again facing the X-Men and Tigers.

In women’s hockey, the Concordia Stingers are the new team to beat for the first time since Oct. 16, 2019. The Stingers jumped from No. 4 to No. 1 in the nation after edging then-ranked No.2 McGill (0-0-1), before winning a thriller over the Ottawa Gee-Gees (0-1-0). Concordia will look to keep the streak alive at Carleton this Friday.

Finally, the Queen’s Gaels women’s rugby team reclaimed the No.1 spot in the final rankings of the season, after emerging victorious in the OUA championship against the then-ranked No.4 Guelph Gryphons. The Gaels (4-0 / 2-0 playoffs) won 46-17 en route to their second OUA title in program history and first since 2013. Queen’s remains undefeated going into the U SPORTS Championship hosted by Ottawa Gee-Gees from Oct.30-Nov. 3.

In other U SPORTS rankings, Cape Breton (men’s soccer), Ottawa (women’s soccer), Calgary (men’s cross country), Queen’s (women’s cross country) and Western (football) remain at No.1 for another week.

Top 10 rankings will conclude next week for soccer and cross country, and begin in basketball and men’s volleyball.
