The national brand of university sports in Canada introduced Wednesday a new championship logo system for all 21 of its national championships, beginning with the 2019-20 season.

Logos for the market-driven U SPORTS hockey, basketball and volleyball championships incorporate colours inspired by the field of play while integrating iconic landmarks that resonate with the host cities and communities welcoming the national championships.

“The new championship logo system reflects the values of U SPORTS being student-athlete centred, committed to excellence and team work,”

“The new championship logo system reflects the values of U SPORTS being student-athlete centred, committed to excellence and teamwork,” said U SPORTS Chief Sport Officer Lisette Johnson-Stapley. “There is growing interest from communities across the country to bid for U SPORTS championships and the new logo system builds connections between our universities, student-athletes to the host communities.”

All remaining championships – women’s field hockey, women’s rugby, men’s and women’s soccer, cross country, swimming, wrestling, track and field, and curling – encompass the sport-specific colour and elements from the respective sport itself. This is illustrated through a primary logo, a secondary banner logo, and a wordmark, enabling multiple usage opportunities for the host schools and community.

These championships may join the market-driven sports with local iconic imagery as the new logo system evolves over the coming years.

“The championship logo system provides us with a flexible template that ensures a unique look being used each year as our U SPORTS championships travel across the country,” added Johnson-Stapley.

The new logo system was developed by U SPORTS in collaboration with Pix Design Group, a Toronto-based graphic design firm.

The logo for the 55th Vanier Cup this November in Quebec City remains unchanged from last season, maintaining the branding launched in partnership with host Université Laval for the 2018 and 2019 U SPORTS football national championships.

A new promotional campaign showcasing the U SPORTS student-athlete will be unveiled at a later date.

The U SPORTS fall championship season begins Oct.30 – Nov.3 with the 2019 U SPORTS Women’s Field Hockey and U SPORTS Women’s Rugby Championships, hosted by the Canada West champion and Ottawa Gee-Gees, respectively.
