With U SPORTS Rugby in action for the first time this season, the McMaster Marauders will travel to Peterborough, Ont. to take on the Trent Excalibur in an important early-season test.

The Marauders finished last season with a 2-2 regular-season record in the tough OUA Shiels Division.

McMaster’s Katie McLeod finished the 2021 season eighth in the OUA with 29 total points. McLeod scored three tries and added seven conversions in the shortened season.

Trent finished the 2021 season with a 3-1 record in the OUA Russell Division, outscoring their opponents 141 to 94 in the process.

Inside centre Maddy Moodie was a revelation for the Excalibur last season, scoring a try while adding four converts for 13 points. Without Alex Van der Horst and Caleigh McMillan on the pitch, Trent will rely on Moodie for offensive production.

No. 2 Saskatchewan Huskies @ Calgary Dinos

Coming off a loss in the 2021 Vanier Cup, the reigning Hardy Cup and Uteck Bowl Champion Saskatchewan Huskies are set to do battle with a Calgary Dinos squad that has hopes to repeat their Vanier Cup winning efforts of 2019.

According to a Canada West pre-season coaches poll, the Huskies are the 2022 favourites to repeat as Hardy Cup champions.

While losing All-Canadian running back Adam Machart to graduation is a blow, the emergence of fourth-year running back, Josh Ewanchyna, is bound to have Huskies fans jumping out of their seats.

Quarterback Mason Nyhus remains at the helm for Saskatchewan. The fifth-year student-athlete threw for 2,686 yards with 22 touchdowns and only four picks in 2021. Throwing for 275.5 per game during the regular season was good for third in the nation.

The Calgary Dinos, who lost the brotherly duo of Tyson and Jalen Philpot to the CFL draft and former starting quarterback Josiah Joseph to graduation will have their work cut out for them against the green football machine.

Matteo Spoletini will take the reins under centre, while fourth-year slotback Dante Carbone will look to fill the gaping hole left by the Philpot twins’ departure.

Montreal Carabins @ Laval Rouge et Or

The Laval Rouge et Or will host the Montréal Carabins in a rivalry game to kick off the first weekend soccer slate in RSEQ action.

In a rematch of the 2021 RSEQ Conference Championship, the Carabins will be looking for revenge after falling to the Rouge et Or in penalties a season ago.

In 2021 regular-season play, Montréal topped the table with a 13-0-1 record, while Laval took the second spot with a 10-1-3 record.

Laval striker Joëlle Mercier led the RSEQ conference in points last year, scoring nine goals and adding a pair of assists. The Rouge et Or will look to 2021 second-team -Canadian, Mercier, as their prime offensive option on attack.

Maxyme Nobert led the Carabins scoring attack, netting eight goals and an assist during the 2021 campaign. The 2021 first-team RSEQ All-Star will undoubtedly be a focal point in the Carabins offense.

York Lions @ Windsor Lancers

The York Lions will kick off the 2022 men’s soccer season with a tough road fixture against the Windsor Lancers.

York, who led the OUA East conference with an 8-1-1 regular season record in 2021, will be looking for redemption after narrowly missing OUA gold versus the Guelph Gryphons.

York will rely on forward Dieu Merci Yuma up front. The first-team All-Canadian led the OUA with 14 goals and five assists in 2021 and is an immediate contender for the Joe Johnson Memorial Trophy as the U SPORTS Player of the Year.

Windsor keeper Brandon Gaudreau, who made 17 saves in three starts as a Lancer last year will have his hands full with the potent York attack. Gaudreau will be the bonafide starter for Windsor heading into his second year of competition.
