Women’s Soccer Player of the Week: Alena Spehar, McMaster

McMaster striker Alena Spehar scored six goals as the Marauders earned a weekend sweep of the Waterloo Warriors, winning 3-2 on the road on Friday and recording a 4-0 shutout 4-0 Sunday. The results move McMaster into a tie for first place in the OUA West with a 2-0 record. Spehar registered her goals on the strength of eight shots on goal over the two games and her back-to-back hat tricks are the first of her varsity career. She capped off her performance with a late-game penalty on Sunday that put the game out of reach.
Men’s Soccer Player of the Week: Matthew Ciavarro, Queen’s

Matthew Ciavarro, a product of Cambridge, Ont., picked up four points, on three goals and one assist, as the Gaels opened up OUA play with a pair of home draws. He started off the week against a strong Toronto Varsity Blues team and recorded two of his side’s three goals, while assisting on the third, in a 3-3 deadlock. A few days later, they hosted No. 6-ranked Ontario Tech and, once again, Ciavarro was at the heart of the Gaels offense. He found the back of the net once again against the Ridgebacks, opening the scoring less than five minutes in, and his team parlayed that start into a 2-2 draw. He is currently second in the country in both goals (3) and points (4).
