Women’s Swimming
The defending champion UBC Thunderbirds are the top-ranked U SPORTS swimming programs to begin the 2018-19 season.
The Thunderbirds, who will host this year’s U SPORTS Swimming Championships in late February, swept the national titles last season for the second consecutive year – with the men capturing their fourth banner in seven seasons, while the women earned their sixth title in the same span.
A pair of changes at the top highlight this week’s rankings with the reigning champion Brock Badgers returning to No.1 in men’s and women’s wrestling after winning the Ryerson open, while the Laval Rouge Or (4-0) are back in top spot in men’s volleyball following a narrow 3-2 win over then-unranked Montreal. The Rouge et Or visit UNB for on Friday and Saturday for a weekend series.
In other U SPORTS rankings, UNB (men’s hockey), Manitoba (women’s hockey), Carleton (men’s basketball), Laval (women’s basketball) and Calgary (women’s volleyball) remain national leaders for another week.
New this season, U SPORTS is implementing the ELO Rating System for the calculation of its weekly national rankings. Powered by RankR, ELO’s unique algorithm blends a statistical calculation with customized variables that is adaptable across a range of sports. For men’s hockey, it will be combined with the results of the media panel balloting (each weighted 50%) to produce the final top 10. For more information, click here.
