Monday Morning Quarterback: Axewomen Rugby goes undefeated in AUS regular season with a victory over X-Women
TORONTO – Ella Milloy, a former swimmer for the McGill Martlets and first-year Carleton University journalism student, has been selected as the 2021 recipient of the second annual Peter Watts Memorial Grant.
Milloy, who began her Master of Journalism at Carleton earlier this fall, competed for the Martlets for the last four years, while also serving as the team’s communications liaison and leading its promotional efforts on social media throughout the season. In addition, Milloy was a staff writer for her campus newspaper, The McGill Tribune, while completing her undergraduate studies in political science, with minors in both communications and French.

I hope to carry on Peter’s legacy as I learn new journalistic skills and while competing for the Carleton Ravens swim team. Thank you again to the Watts family for their generosity.”

Milloy’s experience also includes a Sports Programming Assistant role for the 2020 Canadian Francophone Games held in Victoria, B.C., where she organized bilingual communications materials and promotional content on behalf of the Local Organizing Committee for local and provincial sports organizations.
The $3,000-annual Peter Watts Memorial Grant was established in January 2020 for a period of six years to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Watts’ passing and is given to a student entering their first year of studies in a journalism, media or communications program at a university registered with Universities Canada. Students graduating high school and beginning their university education, as well as those with prior post-secondary experience in another field who pursue further studies in one of these areas are both accepted.

Watts who died on January 18, 2019 was known for his work at CBC and TSN, and particularly his lifelong support for Canadian university student-athletes. He also served as a media relations consultant for The Honourable Lois and Doug Mitchell U SPORTS Athlete of the Year Awards.
Selection process information for the third annual Peter Watts Memorial Grant will be announced in January 2022.
