Defending U SPORTS national champions UBC and Toronto lead the respective men’s and women’s fields after day one of the 2023 U SPORTS Championships, Feb. 23.
The UBC Thunderbirds claimed three individual and one relay title to lead the men’s team field with 416 points after the first night of competition. Ottawa and Calgary hold second and third places in the team standings with 321 and 307 points, respectively.
On the women’s side, defending U SPORTS champions Toronto leads all teams with 479 points, followed by UBC in second at 436.5 points, and Calgary in bronze position with 321 points.
Breaking the lone U SPORTS record to fall on night one, Toronto’s Gabe Mastromatteo captured the men’s 50m breaststroke crown with a time of 27.53.
UBC’s Blake Tierney finished the day with two individual medals, finishing with a silver medal in the 100m backstroke with a 56.19 mark and a bronze in the 200m IM with a time of 2:04.78.
Toronto’s Aleksa Gold and Hayley Klenk led the individual medallists on the women’s side, each capturing two medals. Gold took silver in the 50m freestyle with a time of 26.12 and bronze in the 100m backstroke at 1:03.36, while Klenk took second in the 100m back with a 1:03.30 showing and bronze in the 200 IM with a 2:20.19 performance.
Capturing the gold medal in front of her hometown crowd, Victoria native and Victoria Vike Lauren Crisp won the women’s 100m backstroke with a 1:03.27 performance. Laval’s Danika Ethier (50m breaststroke, 31.80) and McGill’s Pablo Collin (400m freestyle, 3:57.71) round out day one highlights from Saanich Commonwealth Place.
Day two of the 2023 U SPORTS Swimming Championships resumes Feb. 24, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. PT.
