Men’s Swimming News

McGill was a triple threat at the RSEQ swimming championships last weekend, earning all three conference banners at UQTR's Centre de l'activité physique et sportive.

Not only did the Redbirds and Martlets finish atop their respective men's and women's divisions and capture the combined banner, but the women’s squad also earned a clean sweep in the 800-metre freestyle. Naomie Lo took the gold medal, while teammates Iris Tinmouth and Natasha Frost notched second and third-place finishes, respectively.

Lo was then back on top in the 200-metre butterfly as the second-year science student beat out her teammates again, clocking a time of 2:19.12. Cailin McMurray finished second, and Hana Mollin rounded out the top three as McGill flexed their muscle once again.

On the men’s side, Brendan Van Herk of the Ottawa Gee-Gees received a gold medal swimming to a time of 2:01.23 in the 200-metre butterfly. U de M’s Vincent Laperle took gold in the 100-metre backstroke in 54.17 seconds.

Freshman Danika Ethier of Laval Rouge Et Or won the 100-metre breaststroke in a time of 1:10.22.

McGill opened the championships by grabbing gold medals and finished it the exact same way. The women's team of Elizabeth Ling, Daphné Danyluk, Greta Zapparoli, and Isabel Sarty dashed to a first-place in the 4x100 freestyle in a blistering time of 3:46.69.

The McGill men, consisting of Pablo Collin, Hazem Issa, Bruno Dehem-Lemelin, and Malachy Belkhelladi, snagged gold in the men’s 4x100 freestyle.

The U SPORTS Swimming Championships will be held February 23-25 at the Saanich Commonwealth Pool in Victoria, B.C.
