Women’s Swimmer of the Week: Elizabeth Ling, McGill

Elizabeth Ling had a perfect meet day as she won four gold medals and satisfied two qualification standards for the 2024 U SPORTS Swimming Championships. Individually, she won the 100m freestyle (56.25) and 100m backstroke (1:01.99). Ling also led her team to a first-place finish in the 4x50m freestyle relay (1:44.24) and 4x50m medley relay (1:53.49), where she swam the freestyle lap and achieved a personal best time (24.94).

The fourth-year Albertan closed out her night as the top scoring athlete with 656 points (according to the FINA scale) and helped the Martlets bring home their third consecutive victory of the RSEQ season.

Men’s Swimmer of the Week: Hazem Issa, McGill

  • Strokes: Butterfly, Freestyle
  • Hometown: Cairo, Egypt
  • Year: 3rd year
  • Program: Civil Engineering

Hazem Issa was a standout swimmer in the third Coupe Universitaire where he totalled four medals and led the Redbirds to a third straight win this season. Issa won the 50m butterfly (24.24), being sufficient to qualify for the U SPORTS National Championship.

He secured the silver medal position in the 100m freestyle (51.51), only 0.82 seconds short of winning. He also led his team to a gold medal finish in the 4x50m freestyle relay (1:31.78) and 4x200m freestyle relay (7:31.25). His performances were enough to end the meet as the highest scoring male athlete with 636 points (as per the FINA scale).
