Men’s Track & Field News

The Guelph Gryphons highlight the first rankings of 2018 as the top-ranked U SPORTS track and field squads in the nation.

The Gryphons men won their first national title since 2013 last March, while the Guelph women claimed the team silver medal at the U SPORTS Track and Field Championships in Edmonton. The defending women’s champion Toronto Varsity Blues begin the year tied for the No.7 ranking.

This week’s rankings also feature a pair of changes at the top. In men’s hockey, the StFX X-Men return to pole position for the first time since the opening week of the 2016-17 season (Oct. 11, 2016). The then-No.4 ranked X-Men upset then-No.2 UNB 5-2 on the road Saturday, handing the Varsity Reds their first regulation loss of the year. Alberta meanwhile, who held the No.1 position since Oct. 24 was handed back-to-back 5-4 (OT) and 3-1 losses by unranked Manitoba. StFX hosts UPEI and UNB this weekend.

In women’s volleyball, the U SPORTS champion UBC Thunderbirds return to top spot, after beating the Bisons 3-0 and 3-2 at home. They’ll head to Winnipeg for a weekend series on Friday and Saturday.

In other U SPORTS rankings, Carleton (men’s basketball), Acadia (women’s basketball), Manitoba (women’s hockey), UBC (men’s and women’s swimming), Trinity Western (men’s volleyball), Alberta (men’s wrestling) and Brock (women’s wrestling) all remain national leaders.
