(SAINT JOHN, NB) On the second day of competition at the 2022 U SPORTS Track and Field Championship, presented by Saint John LNG, in Saint John, the Guelph Gryphons and Toronto Varsity Blues surged to the top of the women’s and men’s team standings, respectively.

Guelph’s Mark Bujnowski picked up the first gold medal of the day in the men’s weight throw with a heave of 20.48 metres, besting Andreas Troschke and Brayden Klippenstein of the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

Distance races were featured on the track.

In the women’s 1000 metres, Guelph’s Sadie-Jane Hickson was first across the line, followed closely by Toronto’s Jazz Shukla and Windsor’s Sydney Pattison.

Western’s Kate Current won the women’s 3000 metres, in a time of 9:17.59. Laval’s Jesse Lacourse and Catherine Beauchemin took the silver and bronze medals.

In the men’s 1000 metres, Calgary’s Eric Lutz surged passed Guelph’s Alec Purnell late in the race to claim gold. Rohan Nowbotsing ran third.

Laval’s Thomas Fafard beat teammate Jean-Simon Desgagné to the finish line by 5/100ths of a second to win the men’s 3000 metres. McMaster’s Andrew Davies was third.

In a closely contested women’s 4-by-800 metre relay, the Western Mustangs beat Saskatchewan and Guelph.

In the men’s 4-by-800, Guelph rode a strong start by New Brunswick native Andrew LeBlanc to a victory over Toronto. Manitoba earned the bronze medal.

Alberta’s Catharina Kluyts won the women’s 60-metre hurdles, with Guelph’s Tyra Boug and Timi Adelugba rounding out the top three.

In the men’s 60-metre hurdles, Western’s Nathaniel Mechler won gold. Craig Thorne, of Guelph, was second and Toronto’s David Adeleye was third.

Guelph’s Zoe Sherar won the women’s 300 metres, ahead of Trinity Western’s Grace Konrad and Carleton’s Alexandra Telford.

In the men’s 300 metres, Karson Lehner, of Saskatchewan, beat Alberta’s Austin Cole by 4/100ths of a second. Toronto’s Emmett Bravakis was third.

Saskatchewan’s Kieran Johnston overcame a slight Day 1 deficit to win the men’s heptathlon with 4899 points. Manitoba’s Max Speiser took the silver medal, with 4778, and Trinity Western’s Brandon Gremaud earned the bronze.

In the women’s long jump, York’s Leah Jones leapt 6.18 metres to beat Regina’s Joely Welburn and Manitoba’s Kirsten Hurdal.

Manitoba’s Anna McConnell won the women’s shot put, with a put of 14.39 metres. She beat York’s Kaitlin Brooks and Calgary’s Osereme Omosun.

Toronto’s Aiden Grout won the men’s high jump, beating Windsor’s Caleb Keeling and Manitoba’s Daxx Turner.

Grout’s Varsity Blues teammate Eric Che won the men’s long jump, beating Montreal’s Clement Mougeolle and Guilhem Hermet, who took the silver and bronze medals.

Toronto’s Alexzandra Throndson outlasted the competition in the women’s pole vault. Alberta’s Meghan Lim was second and Guelph’s Mia Rodney third.

The championship meet concludes Saturday.
