CALGARY – A well-balanced offensive attack helped the Trinity Western Spartans to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-13) win over the McGill Martlets in the second semi-final match at the U SPORTS Women’s Volleyball Championship from the Jack Simpson Gym, Saturday.

It was all Spartans from start to finish, as they finished with a 0.364 hit percentage compared to the Martlets’ 0.041 en route to a straight-set victory and a spot in the national final.

The top-ranked Spartans put their offensive depth on full display against the Martlets, as Trinity Western had four separate players finish with at least eight kills over the three sets. Savannah Purdy had a team-high nine kills, while Meaghan Mealy, Ansah Odoom and Avery Heppell each added eight of their own. McGill’s best source of offence all night was Victoria Iannotti who had a team-high nine kills. Iannotti was also the Martlets’ most efficient attacker, leading the team with a 0.174 hit percentage.

Trinity Western was able to frustrate their opponents right from the opening serve, as McGill finished with a -0.037 hit percentage in the first set and were never able to find their rhythm from there.

The Spartans now move on to the National Championship match Sunday at 6 p.m. (Mountain) where they will take on a fellow Canada West opponent in the Mount Royal Cougars. McGill will have to settle for a battle for bronze with the Alberta Pandas at 3 p.m. Sunday.
