Marthe Laplante Brady dominated the women’s 82-kilogram weight class in London on Sunday. The first-year student from Kingston, who also plays rugby for Queen’s, won her first match 10-9 and then won her last two by fall, the first pin was at 4:40 and the second at 4:49, earning her first place at the Western Open.

The Gaels’ next meet is at the Ontario Juvenile and Cadet Championships this weekend.


Carlos Vargas, Brock

Class: 68 kg
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Year of eligibility: 1st
Academic program: Film Studies

Carlos Vargas had a perfect weekend at last week’s Western Open in London. The first-year film studies student won gold in the 68-kilogram weight class after sailing through the competition without conceding a single point. He defeated wrestlers from McMaster, Western and Carleton on his way to the gold medal, winning all three by the identical score of 10-0.

The Badgers return to the mat on February 11 when they head to the OUA Championships in Hamilton, Ont.
