Badgers, Pandas earn U SPORTS wrestling banners

Mia Friesen of Brock and Alex Moore from Concordia have been named the U SPORTS wrestlers of the week for the period ending February 26, 2023.

Academic program: Psychology
Mia Friesen dominated the women’s 56-kilogram weight class at the U SPORTS Wrestling Championships this past weekend, claiming the gold medal and earning U SPORTS female wrestler of the year honours. The second year St. Catharines, Ontario, native earned technical fall wins over Guelph (10-0) and Alberta (11-1), before picking up the pin over Concordia (0:52) to secure a place in the final. In the gold medal match up, Friesen claimed the gold by a 10-0 technical fall victory. Further, Friesen helped lead the Badgers to second place overall in the women’s division.

Year of eligibility: 3rd
Academic program: Management
Alex Moore dominated the men’s 90-kilogram weight class at the U SPORTS Wrestling Championships this past weekend. Moore went undefeated and earned a technical fall win (10-0) over McMaster in a gold medal match. The third year outscored his four opponents 43-2 at the competition and was named the Outstanding Male Competitor at the U SPORTS Wrestling Championships for the second time. The Stingers men’s team tied for fifth place with Calgary at 39 points.
