Brock’s Friesen and Price of Algoma named U SPORTS Wrestlers of the Week

Mia Fiesen is the U SPORTS women’s wrestler of the week after obtaining a second gold medal at the OUA championship, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.,  last weekend. Friesen’s performance helped her gain the title of outstanding female wrestler of the tournament. After taking down Jayden Sparks of the Guelph Gryphons by technical fall in her lone matchup during the pool stage, the third year social sciences major from St. Catharines, Ont., took on the fourth ranked wrestler in the 56 kilograms weight class from the Western Mustangs, Kentall Dettloff. Mia Friesen won the duel by fall in only 24 seconds in the gold medal match.

The Brock Badgers are headed to the U Sports Championship taking place in Guelph, Ont., on March 2.

Kyle Price, Algoma

Kyle Price of the Algoma Thunderbirds took home first place in the 90kg category at the OUA Wrestling Championship last Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie, as he posted a perfect 5-0 record on his way to being named the outstanding men’s wrestler of the event. Price won the first round against Ryan Barney of Lakehead by a technical fall (10-0), then went on to win the second round over Jackson Browning of Western by injury default. After a third-round bye, the Montrealer won the fourth and fifth rounds by Fall against Babs Ossom of York and Aayden Callan of Queen’s in 0:54 and 1:22, respectively. Price met Howard Moffatt of McMaster in the final where Price won by Fall in 1:54 to take home the gold,

The Thunderbirds rest up for the upcoming U SPORTS Championships which will take place on March 2 in Guelph.
