Transfer Information

For Transfers from 2020-21 to 2021-22

AFAupdateTWen.png (315 KB)

Any U SPORTS student-athlete who receives an Athletic Financial Award (which requires being listed on the Eligibility Certificate) during the 2020-2021 academic year is subject to a transfer restriction (sit-out) until the conclusion of the regular season of the sport in question’s 2021-2022 athletic season.

Student-athletes who return (or otherwise have the payment of their AFA reversed, as considered by the financial aid, or equivalent, office) their AFA by 11:59 PM (local) on May 15, 2021, are NOT subject to that bridge transfer policy. Accordingly, those who return their AFA prior to that deadline would be permitted to transfer unencumbered. The Transfer Verification Form will be updated on the U SPORTS website in order to account for this question.

EXAMPLES

  1. Student-Athlete A accepts an AFA for the 2020-2021 academic year. Regardless of their participation, they’re required to sit out the entirety of the 2021-2022 season should they chose to transfer.
  2. Student-Athlete B does not accept an AFA for the 2020-2021 academic year, and is free to transfer for the 2021-2022 season. They are eligible immediately.
  3. Student-Athlete C accepts an AFA, but graduates. Student-Athlete C then goes on to a Master’s program at another institution. This student-athlete is eligible immediately, because they’re accessing the Master’s exemption.

  1. Student-athlete D received $4,000 AFA from University A. Prior to May 15, 2021, they re-pay their AFA in full.  This student-athlete is immediately eligible to be listed on an Eligibility Certificate at a new U SPORTS institution in 2021-2022 (pending all other U SPORTS eligibility regulations).

  2. Student-athlete E received $4,000 from University B. Prior to May 15, 2021 they meet with their Financial Aid office and request to have their AFA reversed. The student-athlete now has a balance owing of $1,000 on their account. They re-pay it three weeks into the Summer Semester so that their transcripts can be released. This student-athlete is immediately eligible to be listed on an Eligibility Certificate at a new U SPORTS institution in 2021-2022 (pending all other U SPORTS eligibility regulations). This is because the return of the AFA was completed prior to May 15, 2021

  3. Student-athlete F received an AFA of $4,000 from University C. On August 1st, 2021, during the Summer Semester, the student-athlete meets with the Financial Aid office and repays their AFA. This student-athlete is subject to the Bridge Transfer Policy and its sit-out period, as they did not meet the deadline to return their AFA

For the 2021-22 Academic Year and Beyond

Effective for the 2021-22 Academic Year, Policy 40.10.6.2.1.6.2 will read as follows:

Participation in any other club tackle football league inside or outside of Canada or the United States, subsequent to August 15 of the year an athlete turns 20, is subject to the charging of eligibility.

The policy will apply to student-athletes who were listed on a 2019-20 or 2020-21 Eligibility Certificate, as well as student-athletes entering into U SPORTS for the first time in the upcoming 2021-22 season - which will allow for current and future student-athletes to be transitioned into the updated Participation-based concept.

Relief will be given to U SPORTS Policy 40.10.6.2.1.7.1 and 40.10.6.2.1.7.2 during the 2020-2021 academic year, allowing U SPORTS student-athletes to concurrently participation in amateur ice hockey outside of U SPORTS after January 10, 2021.

Professional Participation

The CEO has implemented a one-time bridge allowance to U SPORTS Policies 40.10.6.2.1.7.3.1 and 40.10.6.2.1.7.3.2 for prospective student-athletes and Confirmed Recruits who would be entering to U SPORTS for the 2021-2022 Academic Year (or beyond).

This would allow for participation in any regular season or playoff games of a professional league without application of the current policies. For clarity, there will be no allowance made to this policy for current U SPORTS student-athletes.
