McGill University established a school record for academic prowess among its varsity sports programs in 2020. A total of 149 student-athletes achieved Academic All-Canadian status, surpassing the previous high of 148 established in 2006.
 
Since 1991, McGill ranks second among all universities with 2,917 Academic All-Canadians, trailing only Alberta (3,228). For the first time, the football program proved to be the smartest of all McGill teams with 22 Academic All-Canadians, the highest total ever produced by the gridiron squad. McGill's 149 accounted for 38.1 per cent of the institution's 391 student-athletes who competed in programs sanctioned by U SPORTS.
 

The breakdown by class was 36 freshmen, 35 sophomores, 42 juniors and 36 seniors.

In order to qualify, a student-athlete must be registered as full-time in a U SPORTS program and have achieved a minimum of 80% in their studies while consuming a year of athletic eligibility.
