UQTR’s Vincent Jourdenaise and Evie McDonald of the University of Ottawa will lead Canada into the 2022 World University Championship Canoe Sprint held in Bydgoszcz, Poland from September 16-18.
A total of thirteen student-athletes from across the country will represent Canada next month at the Brdyujście Regatta Course, recognized as the oldest course in Poland.
Jourdenais first represented Canada internationally at the 2015 World Junior Championships where he competed in the K-4 1000m and K-2 200m.
The 25-year-old was part of his first senior team at the 2018 Pan American Championships where he won gold in the K-4 500m and silver in the K-4 1000m. He made his World Cup debut in 2019, forming a K-2 1000m partnership with Brian Malfesi.
After two top-four finishes in B finals at the World Cups, they finished fifth in the B final at the 2019 World Championships, which would later be enough to book Canada an Olympic spot in the event. They secured their spots in that boat by winning the national trials.
In their Olympic debuts at Tokyo 2020, Jourdenais and Malfesi were B finalists in the K-2 1000m.
McDonald, who is a second-year medicine and health student at the University of Ottawa, is in her fourth year competing for Canada at the national level. The Canoe sprinter competed at the Olympic Hopes regatta in 2019 in her first international event outside of Canada, placing third in the C1 200 metres.
McDonald scored eight medals in her eight races at the golds at the Nationals, including a gold in the Junior Women's C1 200m where she broke a Canadian record held by Olympic medalist Laurence Vincent Lapointe since 2021.
The 18-year-old is also an RBC Future Olympian and participated in the RBC Training Ground in January of 2020.
