Stephane Huard scored the game-winner for the McGill Redbirds as they eliminate the UBC Thunderbirds 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the 2024 U SPORTS men’s hockey University Cup at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Friday evening.

The freshman from Blainville, Que. gave McGill the lead for good on an even-strength goal eight minutes into the third period after Brandon Frattaroli forced a turnover in neutral ice and found Huard wide open.

Xavier Fortin’s goal, assisted by Huard, opened up the scoring for the Redbirds during a power play in the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Zachary Gallant gave McGill their first lead six minutes later on another power play goal.

The Redbirds’ player of the game Alexis Shank stopped 35 shots to help the sixth-seeded McGill complete the upset.

UBC struck first despite multiple close opportunities for McGill in the first period. Josh Williams scored the first goal for the third-seeded Thunderbirds, and assisted on Tian Rask’s goal late in the second to even the game at two goals apiece.

Cole Schwebius made 11 saves for UBC.

The McGill Redbirds will face off against the UQTR Patriotes in the second semifinals of the tournament on Saturday.
