Championships Men’s Hockey

Carson Gallagher was the double-overtime hero for the TMU Bold as they get a tough 2-1 win over the Calgary Dinos in the second quarterfinal matchup of the 2024 U SPORTS men’s hockey University Cup at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Thursday evening.

Championship Schedule

Will Portokalis found Gallagher, TMU’s player of the game, for the winning goal four and a half minutes into the second overtime period. Ryan Wells scored the equalizer for the Bold in the first period from just inside Calgary’s blue line on a pass out of a crowd from Chris Playfair.

Kai Edmonds made 51 saves to secure the semifinal berth for TMU.

The Dinos struck first when a roughing penalty was called on TMU’s Zach Roberts less than five minutes into the game. Jaeger White found the back of the net just 20 seconds into the power play.

Carl Tetachuk stopped 44 shots on the night, but could not come up with one more to save Calgary’s season.

Despite the low scoring affair, the night was not any less entertaining, as it was filled with big hits and even bigger saves by both goalies. The referees had to separate players on multiple occasions throughout the game.

The TMU Bold will play the UNB REDs on Saturday in the first semifinal game of the championships.
