Championships Men’s Hockey

Benjamin Corbeil recorded three points for the UNB REDs as they defeated the Brock Badgers 4-0 in quarterfinals action of the 2024 U SPORTS men’s hockey University Cup in Toronto on Thursday afternoon.

Corbeil scored two goals in the final period to close out the win for the undefeated AUS champions. The UNB Player of the Game forced a turnover after the Badgers won a face-off in their own zone to record his first goal of the tournament with just under three minutes left in the game, and followed that up with an empty-net goal a minute later.

Cody Morgan opened up the scoring for the REDs six minutes into the game. Corbeil recorded an assist on the second goal of the game when Kade Landry scored a five-on-three goal after two consecutive penalties were called on Brock, just 17 seconds apart. UNB goalie Samuel Richard made nine saves to record the shutout.

Rookie of the year Connor Ungar made a whopping 34 saves for the eighth-seeded Badgers, but could not completely survive the continuous onslaught by the REDS. Brock played better team defence in the second period, only allowing eight shots on goal, but could not capitalize on the offensive end. Ryan Thompson was the only player to record more than one shot on goal, with two attempts.

The UNB REDS will face the winner of the matchup between the Calgary Dinos and the TMU Bold on Saturday in the semifinals.
