Samuel Richard stopped all 22 of the shots he faced to earn the shutout for the UNB REDs as they defeat the TMU Bold 7-0 in the first semifinal matchup of the 2024 U SPORTS men’s hockey University Cup at the Mattamy Athletic Centre Saturday afternoon.

Championship Schedule

The 2023 University Cup MVP did not see his second shot on goal until the 13:29 mark of the first period, after making an early save one minute into the game. The REDs’ defence helped him out big time, successfully killing all five of TMU’s power plays.

UNB got things started early when Benjamin Corbeil tipped the puck in front of the net for Sean McGurn, who beat TMU’s Kai Edmonds for the first goal of the game just five minutes in. All seven of the REDs’ goals were scored by different players, with Kale McCallum, Colton Kammerer, Austen Keating, Kade Landry, Camaryn Baber and Jason Willms also getting on the scoresheet.

Kammerer, UNB’s player of the game, also had two assists for three points in the game, and Brady Gilmour recorded four assists.

TMU’s penalty kill did great to limit UNB’s scoring, allowing only one goal on six power plays, but could not stop the REDs’ overwhelming even-strength offence, with Edmonds needing to face 48 shots and saving 41 throughout the game.

Zach Roberts led the way for the Bold with five shots on goal, while Ryan Wells recorded four.

The TMU Bold will play for the bronze medal on Sunday morning against the loser of the second semifinal matchup between the McGill Redbirds and the UQTR Patriotes, while the UNB REDs will play the winner of that same game on Sunday evening.
