Football Top 10: Reigning Vanier Cup champs enter playoffs as No. 1 seed

U SPORTS Staff
The McGill Martlets (women) and seven-time defending U SPORTS champion Carleton Ravens (men) begin the season as the top-ranked basketball teams in the nation.
Carleton once again claimed U SPORTS gold last March after a 78-69 victory over Ryerson, who begin the new campaign at No.7. The Ravens begin their season this weekend hosting Guelph Friday night and Algoma on Saturday afternoon.
On the women’s side, the reigning U SPORTS gold medalist McGill start the year in top spot. The Marlets, who beat No. 6 Laval in the gold medal game, kick off their season by hosting a rematch Laval on Saturday.
This week’s rankings are also highlighted by three changes at the top. In men’s soccer, Cape Breton (11-0-1) takes over the pole position for the first time in school history. The Capers finished the regular season with back-to-back 2-0 wins on the road against Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s, and will host the AUS championship tournament this weekend.
Meanwhile, UBC (women’s hockey) and Guelph (men’s cross country) also leap up to No.1. The Thunderbirds swept a weekend series at home against Lethbridge, while the Gryphons claimed the OUA championship title hosted by Windsor on Saturday.
In other U SPORTS rankings, Queen’s (women’s cross country), Laval (women’s soccer), Trinity Western (men’s volleyball) and Alberta (men’s hockey and women’s volleyball) all remain national leaders for another week.
Note: Top 10 rankings have concluded in men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s cross country.
