Women’s Hockey
The Laval Rouge et Or (men) and Calgary Dinos (women) are the top-ranked U SPORTS volleyball programs to begin the 2018-19 season.
The Dinos, who finished fourth at the national championship last season, kicked off their campaign with back-to-back 3-0 sweeps of the Thompson Rivers WolfPack over the weekend, while the Rouge et Or posted a convincing 3-0 victory over Sherbrooke on Friday. Calgary heads into a bye week, while Laval welcomes Montreal as well as Sherbrooke for a rematch.
In men’s soccer, the Cape Breton Capers (9-0-2) reclaimed the pole position in the penultimate rankings of the year, following 3-0 and 6-1 victories over StFX and Mount Allison. The Capers will head to Acadia to conclude their season on Friday.
In other U SPORTS rankings, Guelph (men’s cross country), Queen’s (women’s cross country), Trinity Western (women’s soccer), Ottawa (women’s rugby), UNB (men’s hockey) and Concordia (women’s hockey) remain national leaders for another week.
New this season, U SPORTS is implementing the ELO Rating System for the calculation of its weekly national rankings. Powered by RankR, ELO’s unique algorithm blends a statistical calculation with customized variables that is adaptable across a range of sports. For football and men’s hockey, it will be combined with the results of the media panel balloting (each weighted 50%) to produce the final top 10. For more information, click here.
