CHARLOTTETOWN – Madison Solie’s overtime heroics sent the Nipissing Lakers to the semifinals in a hard-fought 1-0 win over the UBC Thunderbirds in the second quarter-final game of the 2022 Cavendish Farms U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship.

As Marie Dominico was about to wrap around the net, she passed it to the blueline where Solie fired a shot past goaltender Elise Hugens for the game-winner 2:49 into the extra frame.

Both netminders were outstanding, especially Nipissing’s Chloe Marshall, who turned aside all 41 shots she faced. Hugens recorded 25 saves in the loss.

With this win, the Lakers advance to the semifinals and will play the UNB Reds Saturday at 4 p.m., while UBC will face McGill in Saturday’s consolation game at 10 a.m. The Thunderbirds end their season with an overall regular and post-season record of 18-7-0.
