T-Birds, Varsity Blues make a splash on Day 1 of competition

After two days of competition, it’s the defending U SPORTS national champions UBC and Toronto who continue to dominate on the men’s and women’s sides, Feb. 24.
While UBC leads the points race on the men’s side with 774.5 after two days of action, while Calgary (637 points) and Ottawa (606 points) round out the top three. Toronto made a push with a four-medal night but trails the top three at 503 points.
The UBC women narrowed the gap on Toronto, snagging gold in the women’s 800 free relay and three individual medals. The Varsity Blues remain at the top of the team leaderboard with 878 points, while the Thunderbirds are in second with 860.5 points. Calgary sits in third with 568 points thanks to standout performances by Rebecca Smith and Hannah Johnson, both with silver medals on day two.
Breaking his second U SPORTS record of the weekend, Toronto’s Gabe Mastromatteo captured the men’s 100m breaststroke crown with a time of 1:01.38.
University of British Columbia’s Emma O’Cronin and McGill University’s Pablo Collin followed up their night one 400m free gold medal performances with gold medals in the 200m free tonight, registering times of 1:59.03 and 1:51.19, respectively, to capture the event titles.
Calgary’s Stephen Calkins captured his second gold of the weekend in the men’s 50m fly with a time of 24.21.
The final day of the 2023 U SPORTS Swimming Championships takes place tomorrow, Feb. 25, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. PT.
