MONTREAL, QC. (U SPORTS) - Maggy Burbidge scored a hat-trick to lead the No. 7-seeded STFX X-Women to a 7-3 win over the No. 6 Nipissing Lakers in the second consolation semifinal of the 2023 U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship at CEPSUM in Montréal on Saturday.
Nipissing came out of the gate fast, scoring just 50 seconds in, thanks to a Madison Laberge goal. STFX responded with a 15-shot period, resulting in three unanswered goals by way of Lea MacLeod (who had a three-point first period), Lauren Dabrowski and Maggy Burbidge. The X-Women led 3-1 after the first and did not look to be slowing down.
The teams combined for eight penalties in a busy second period, but goals were scarce. STFX tightened their grip on the Lakers as Vivian Hinch scored the 4-1 marker at 2:30 of the second, and Nipissing continued to struggle. The Lakers were 0-for-4 on the powerplay, and the X-Women took a comfortable 4-1 lead into the third.

Nipissing did not want to go out quietly, and Katie Chomiak brought them within two goals at the 8:30 mark. Maggy Burbidge answered just 45 seconds later to restore the three-goal lead, before Chomiak once again brought the Lakers within two. Maggy Burbidge completed the hat-trick with just under four minutes to go, and Kamdyn Switzer added another to close out a 7-3 win for the X-Women.
Jamie Johnson had a quiet afternoon, getting the win in net with 12 saves on 15 shots for STFX. Chloe Marshall faced 37 shots and stopped 32 in the loss for the Lakers.
With the win, STFX will face the Toronto Varsity Blues in the consolation final on Sunday at 11 a.m. (Eastern). Nipissing’s season comes to a close with the loss on Saturday. All games at the championship can be seen on CBC Sports digital platforms (English) and at usports.ca (French).
