Thunderbirds take consolation final over host Huskies
With the lone shootout goal, Kelly-Ann Nadeau secured the 2-1 bronze-medal victory for the Montréal Carabins at the 2024 GFL U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship, defeating the Waterloo Warriors.
The fifth-year defenceman from Mont-Laurier, Québec, was the second player up in the shootout for Montréal —third overall — and was the only player between the two teams to score.
Both teams had opportunities in the extra 10 minutes, but when the clock struck zero, there was still no winner, so the game went to a shootout — the second in as many games for Montréal — to decide the victor.
Competing at their first national championship, Waterloo got on the board first at 10:41 into the opening period. As captain Brooklyn Cole came down from the top of the circle she received a pass from Madison Pritchard in the opposite corner and then beat Montréal goaltender Aube Racine as she came across.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second period or for 19 minutes and 35 seconds of the third period.
Coming out of a timeout with 3:23 left in the third period, Montréal pulled Racine for the one-player advantage. Nearly three minutes later, with only 25 seconds on the clock, the Carabins capitalized as Juliette Rolland picked up a long rebound off of Warriors’ goaltender Mikayla Schnarr and hit the wide-open net to tie the game and force overtime.
Racine made 23 saves on 24 shots on goal in regulation and overtime, before going three-for-three in the shootout. In the other net, Schnarr made 31 saves on 32 shots and stopped two-of-three in the shootout.
