WOLFVILLE, N.S. (U SPORTS) – Matthew Struthers struck for a pair of goals and an assist as the StFX X-Men shutout the Brock Badgers 3-0 in the opening quarterfinal game at the 2022 U SPORTS Cavendish Farms University Cup on March 31 at the Andrew H. McCain Arena.
StFX opened the scoring at 13:27, with a power-play goal from Santino Centorame, with assists coming from Struthers and Zack Trott.
Struthers would score at 19:07 in the second frame, before putting the game on ice with a wrist shot past Brock goaltender Mario Peccia with less than four minutes left in the game. Forwards Matthew Philp and Liam Hawel recorded assists on both of Struthers’ markers.
StFX netminder Joseph Raaymakers turned aside 32 shots, recording his second shutout of the season in goal for the X-Men, while Peccia made 32 saves in the losing effort.
“I thought we played really well. I think in the first period, both teams were trying to figure things out. The second period, things got a little better,” said Raamakers. “That was a big goal in the second period. The Phillips line and Struthers. In the third, I thought we just took over and our PK tonight was really good.”
With the win, StFX advances to play the winner of the Acadia and Alberta in the semifinals, while Brock is eliminated and ends their season with an overall record of (10-9-2) in regular season, conference playoff and U SPORTS championship action.
