Keon Edwards went over 100 yards rushing in all eight regular season outings and he continued that streak into the semifinal with 136 yards in the Mustangs’ OUA semifinal win over Laurier. He was the workhorse in the Western backfield, carrying the ball 24 times for an average of 5.7 yards per carry.

Despite the workload, it wasn’t until the second half that he found the end zone for a pair of important touchdowns. Edwards scored twice, from nine yards out in the third quarter, and a one-yard score in the late stages, to extend the Mustangs lead and ensure that the road to the Yates Cup would go through in London. The reigning Yates Cup MVP will now lead his team into the 114th edition of the OUA football championship on home turf on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Mount Allison Mounties defensive lineman Vincenzo Frangione was a leader in the Mounties’ defensive battle against the Bishop’s Gaiters on Saturday in Lennoxville. His 10.5 total tackles (nine solo, three assisted) helped Mount Allison keep the Gaiters offence in check, and allowed his squad to come out on top of the AUS semi-final, 15-12.

Frangione and the Mounties head to Antigonish for the 2022 AUS Loney Bowl this Saturday, where they’ll face STFX. This is the Mounties first championship final appearance since 2016.

Special Teams Player of the Week – Richard Burton, Queen’sRichard_Burton_(James_Paddle-Grant).JPG (12.43 MB)

  • Position: Wide Receiver / Kick Returner
  • Hometown: Ottawa, Ont.
  • Year of Eligibility: Fifth
  • Academic Program: Politics and Economics

Queen’s receiver / kick returner helped send his Gaels back to the Yates Cup for the second straight year. Burton only had one return on the day, but he made it count, as he took advantage of a short punt by Ottawa’s Campbell Fair, scooped it up at the Ottawa 45-yard line and took off towards to the end zone, scoring the game’s final points. His return put the game out of reach for the visiting Gee-Gees. Burton was also a focal point in the team’s passing game, leading the Gaels with 108 yards on five receptions. The Gaels visit Western on Saturday as the OUA Yates Cup is on the line for the 114th time.
