ArcelorMittal Dofasco U Sports athletes of the week (#8): UBC’s Shergill, Windsor’s Bellemore honored

Aman Shergill from the University of British Columbia and Corey Bellemore from the University of Windsor are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco U Sports female and male athletes of the week for the period ending October 30, 2016.

Shergill, a fourth-year soccer player from Surrey, B.C., scored a hat trick to help the UBC Thunderbirds to a comeback win against the Alberta Pandas. After the Pandas took a 2-0 lead in the first half of the game, Shergill scored three consecutive goals in the second half to lead the Thunderbirds to a 3-2 win. Cross Country runners Colleen Wilson of Dalhousie, Melanie Myrand of McGill and soccer/hockey player Krystin Lawrence of Windsor were the other female nominees. 

Bellemore, a fifth-year distance runner from Windsor, Ont., won the individual title at the OUA Cross Country Championship on Sunday. In the 10-km race, he ran a season-best time of 30:35.8, becoming the first Lancer to win the men’s individual title since 2005. He was named OUA Cross Country MVP as well as a first-team all-star. His performance help lead the Lancers to a silver medal overall.  Cross country runner Calvin DeWolfe from St. Francis Xavier and Yves Sikubwabo of Laval, and soccer player Bori Falaye from Calgary were also nominated for the men’s award.
