U SPORTS announced Wednesday a five-year partnership renewal with Sherrard Kuzz LLP as its official supporter of the student-athletes selected as Top 8 Academic All-Canadians.

Sherrard Kuzz will support the travel, accommodation and hospitality of the Top 8 Academic All-Canadians unveiled on Tuesday, in the lead-up to the Governor General’s Academic All-Canadian Commendation on Jan. 29 at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

U SPORTS student-athletes achieve Academic All-Canadian status having maintained an average of 80 per cent or better over the academic year while competing for one, or more of their university’s varsity teams. Among these outstanding individuals, one female and one male student-athlete from each of the four U SPORTS conferences are selected annually to make up the Top 8.

Started in 2001, Sherrard Kuzz LLP – one of Canada’s leading employment and labour law firms representing employers – employs several colleagues who are former U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians and student-athletes, including the firm’s founder, Michael Sherrard.

High-performance student-athletes are hard-working and resilient, they take nothing for granted and are always striving to get better at what they do. They are precisely the people corporate Canada, including firms like ours, want and need as part of our future Canadian executive leadership teams.

“The opportunity to support the student-athletes being honoured at the Governor General’s Academic All-Canadian Commendation has been our pleasure and honour,” said Sherrard. “High-performance student-athletes are hard-working and resilient, they take nothing for granted and are always striving to get better at what they do. They are precisely the people corporate Canada, including firms like ours, want and need as part of our future Canadian executive leadership teams. The combination of athletics and academics created balance and discipline throughout my university experience.  Without athletics, I would never have succeeded academically.”

Sherrard, who played for and coached the UNB Reds men’s basketball team, also received the L.B. “Mike” Pearson Award in 2016. The award is presented annually to a distinguished Canadian citizen of outstanding achievements who, having participated in interuniversity athletics, has by his/her personal accomplishments exemplified the ideals and purposes of interuniversity athletics and amateur sport.

“We are excited to continue our partnership with Sherrard Kuzz, who embody the success of our Academic All-Canadians each and every day in the corporate sector,” said U SPORTS President and CEO Graham Brown. “U SPORTS appreciates the firm’s generous support towards our Top 8 student-athletes and we look forward to celebrating their success in academics, athletics and leadership in the community together annually.”
