Football Players of the Week: Simon, Bennett, King honoured

U SPORTS Staff

Regina Running back Atlee Simon, Ottawa defensive back Jackson Bennett and Saint Mary’s returner Johnny King are U SPORTS Football Players of the Week, for the period ending October 15, 2017.

Simon, the fourth-year veteran became the program’s all-time touchdown leader, thanks to a trio of majors in the Rams’ 58-55 double overtime win over Alberta. Simon’s big day increased his career TD total to 29, breaking a tie with former Rams and CFL great Jason Clermont for the program record. On the day, Simon rushed for 205 yards and added 59 receiving yards, with the two of his three majors coming through the air. Simon’s biggest play of the day was his 53-yard rumble to the end zone in the second quarter, which put the Thom Collegiate grad atop the Rams TD list.

For the second time this season, the all-around play from defensive end Jackson Bennett has earned him Player of the Week honours. Bennett, who was named Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 6, was all over the field in the Gee-Gees’ 40-30 win over Waterloo. He led the team in tackles with 8.5, picked up his first sack of the season, showed off his range deep in coverage to assist a pass breakup, returned three kickoffs for 69 yards, and even gained 15 yards on a carry early in the first quarter. With the game tied 30-30, however, it was Bennett who turned the tide for Ottawa. He nabbed the second Gee-Gee interception of the day and returned it 36 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

A commerce student from Greensboro, North Carolina, King was named AUS Subway Player of the Game in the Huskies' 55-11 Homecoming win over Bishop's Saturday in Halifax, N.S. Late in the first quarter, he returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to give Saint Mary's the lead, 14-10. King then had a 56-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter. He had seven punt returns for 121 yards and two kickoff returns for 119 yards in the victory.
