Austen Keating recorded two assists and a goal to lead the UNB REDS to a 4-0 win over the UQTR Patriotes as they became back-to-back champions in the 2024 U SPORTS men’s hockey University Cup at the Mattamy Athletic Centre Sunday evening.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for all my teammates, pushing each other on the ice each and every day,” said Keating on all the accomplishments with this squad.

“It’s just been a great team, we’re family forever now.”

The first team All-Canadian forward had a hand in three of UNB’s goals, assisting on the first two and scoring the third. Keating found Brady Gilmour for the opening goal of the game, before those two combined to feed Cody Morgan for his second goal of the tournament. Morgan returned the favour and found Keating for his goal at the start of the third period, before Isaac Nurse put the cherry on top with an empty-netter in the final minute of the game.

Samuel Richard was perfect once again as he made 23 saves to record his third shutout of the tournament, making it the first time in history that a team has had no goals scored against them in the University Cup.

“We showed that our team is dominant in this league,” said Richard on this record-setting performance.

“But I don’t think we’re satisfied; we’re going to work to get another one for sure.”

The REDs had four players named to the tournament All-Star team, with Keating, Gilmour, Richard and Kale McCallum all being recognized. Gilmour was also named tournament MVP.

UQTR had three power plays in the game, but they just could not solve the REDS’ penalty kill and take advantage of those opportunities. The Patriotes’ player of the game Félix Lauzon recorded five shots on goal, while Félix Lafrance, Conor Frenette, and Simon Lafrance, who was also named a tournament All-Star, each recorded three.

Alexis Gravel stopped 29 shots on the night.
