The defending national finalist Calgary Dinos (women) and reigning bronze medalist Cape Breton Capers (men) begin the season as the teams to beat in U SPORTS soccer, officially marking the return of Top 10 rankings for the 2021-22 season.
In their first matches in nearly two years to begin the new campaign, the Capers opened the AUS season on Saturday with a 2-1 win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies, while the Dinos swept a weekend trip to Edmonton, outscoring the Alberta Pandas and MacEwan Griffins 5-1.
The pair of CW victories gave Calgary a perfect 3-0 start and their first No.1 ranking since Sept. 15, 2002, following a 3-0 clean sheet of crosstown rival Mount Royal the week before.
The U SPORTS women’s soccer champion UBC Thunderbirds, who beat the Dinos in the 2019 final, begin the year ranked No. 2, while on the men’s side, the Montreal Carabins (silver medal) and UQTR Patriotes (gold), rank second and third respectively.
Top 10 rankings for women’s rugby and football will begin next Tuesday, Sept. 21.
