Winning bids deferred by one season to accommodate Fall 2020 championship hosts in 2021 due to COVID-19 cancellations.
Six new U SPORTS championship hosts were announced on Friday in women’s rugby as well as men’s and women’s soccer.
The selected institutions will each host one year later than their original bid proposal – welcoming the top eight teams in the nation for the Fall 2022 and 2023 tournaments – in order to accommodate recent cancellations for the upcoming fall season caused by the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic.
“U SPORTS would like to thank the members who originally bid on the Fall 2021 and 2022 championships for accepting to delay hosting until 2022 and 2023,” said Lisette Johnson-Stapley, Chief Sport Officer at U SPORTS. “This allows the hosts of the cancelled Fall 2020 national championships to present the 2021 editions. We’re excited to unveil our fall championship lineup for the next three years and look forward to a safe return to play in university sport across Canada.”
In 2022, the Victoria Vikes will host the Women’s Rugby Championship, while the Thompson Rivers WolfPack and Laval Rouge et Or are scheduled to host the Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships, respectively. In 2023, new hosts include Laval (women’s rugby), the Cape Breton Capers (men’s soccer) and Queen’s Gaels (women’s soccer).
Several of the athletic programs with winning bids are also scheduled to host other fall sports in 2021, thanks to the one-year deferment. The U SPORTS Fall Championship schedule from 2021-23 is as follows:
