Championships Men’s Soccer

KAMLOOPS – A strong second half performance helped the Cape Breton Capers move past the UQTR Patriotes by a score of 2-0 in quarter-final action at the 2022 U SPORTS Men’s Soccer Championship presented by RBC in Kamloops.

Owen Sheppard and Cian Lynch scored for Cape Breton, with Daniel Clarke making three saves for the shutout.

UQTR had the best chance of the first half when First Team All-Canadian Guillaume Pîanelli flicked a header toward the net that beat everyone but the post.

The Patriotes came out swinging in the second half as well. Vincent Lamy forced an excellent save from Clarke when he fired a powerful shot from outside the 18-yard box in the 57th minute of play.

Cape Breton broke the deadlock just a minute later when Anthony Stolar sent a ball through for Sheppard, who found the back of the net with a sweet chip over the UQTR goalkeeper from 25-yards out.

With the momentum shifting their way, the Capers were able to find a second goal when Cian Lynch fired home a penalty kick after Sheppard was taken down in the box.

The Patriotes almost found a response in the 88th minute through a beautiful strike on the half-volley by Etienne Bertrand, but Clarke was able to parry the ball away.

UQTR outshout Cape Breton by a tally of 16-8 on the night, but solid defence combined with the great play of Clarke secured the victory for the Capers.

With the win, Cape Breton advances to the national semi-final game Friday at 7:30 p.m. PT where they will face the tournament hosts, TRU. UQTR meanwhile, will face the McMaster Marauders in a consolation semi-final tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
