CALGARY, Alta. – Connor Bedard (North Vancouver, B.C./Regina, WHL) scored two goals and had one assist as Team Canada beat U SPORTS 3-0 in the first of two games between the teams at Canada’s National Junior Team selection camp on Saturday night.

Bedard opened the scoring at 1:17 of the first period on a play set up by Dylan Guenther (Edmonton, Alta./Edmonton, WHL). Bedard would add his second of the game midway through the third period, with the assist going to Joshua Roy (Lévis, Que./Sherbrooke, QMJHL).

“I thought our line was generating a lot in the offensive zone. It was nice to get a couple of goals, but both were off good plays and it was nice to finish them,” said Bedard. “We were able to get our cycle going and those are older, bigger guys (on U SPORTS). We were able to work them down low and it was really fun to play with [Guenther and Roy].”

Roy was the other goal scorer for Canada, his goal coming in the second period with assists to Olen Zellweger (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta./Everett, WHL) and Bedard.

Sebastian Cossa (Fort McMurray, Alta./Edmonton, WHL) stopped all 29 shots he faced in the Team Canada net.

Dylan Garand (Victoria, B.C./Kamloops, WHL) made 29 saves on 30 shots and Brett Brochu (Belle River, Ont./London, OHL) stopped 17 of 19 shots as the two Team Canada goaltenders split duties in the U SPORTS net.

Canada outshot U SPORTS 49-29.
